Sterile Processing Technician

The primary purpose of the Sterile Processing Technician is to collect, clean, decontaminate, disinfect and/or sterilize surgical instruments, trays and packs, reusable medical devices and patient care equipment according to established standards and procedures to ensure sterile and functioning supply of materials and equipment. The Sterile Processing Technician understands microbiology and infection control standards.

Specifications:

  1. Education: High School Graduate.  Able to read and communicate in English. BLS.
  2. Experience: One to three years of practice – preferably in a peri-operative setting, or in an Hospital Acute Care or Ambulatory Surgery Center.
  3. Licensure: N/A
  4. Certification: National Sterile Processing Certification preferred.
  5. Special Training: Must have training or self-paced instruction in information management, and be able to utilize computers and various software programs such as: Windows, Word and Power Point.

To perform this position successfully, the individual must be able to perform each essential duty. This is not an all-inclusive list.

Job Duties

  1. Knowledge of reusable surgical instrumentation, micro surgical instrumentation, and power equipment.
  2. Operate the sterile processing equipment (washers, steam, gas, ultrasonic and chemical sterilizers).
  3. Clean and maintain patient care equipment including but not limited to IV pumps, PCAs, CPM machines, Pneumatic pumps, hypo/hyperthermia units.
  4. Understand and document [for the] different types of sterilization materials and equipment.
  5. Choose/Demonstrate the appropriate method of sterilization for particular equipment or supplies.
  6. Maintain and demonstrate Infection Prevention standards for sterile processing department.
  7. Document and maintain accurate sterilization records and logs.
  8. Inspect, assemble and test general and specialty instrumentation for proper functioning.
  9. Perform simple maintenance on equipment (i.e.: clean filters and drains).
  10. Prepare trays for designated areas according to policies and procedures.
  11. Document and maintain inventory of supplies and materials.
  12. Assist in the patient care reflecting the needs of the patients, families and the facility.
  13. Performance indicates knowledge in all areas of services specific to outpatient/ambulatory care, equipment safety, cleaning, maintenance, and procedures.
  14. Utilize personal initiative, maintain a steady level of productivity, must be a self-starter and a compatible and supportive team player.
  15. Communicate appropriately and clearly to the Center Director and Clinical Manager/Assistant Director.

Clinically

  1. Assist in transport of patient to recovery with RN, and Anesthesia Care Provider as needed.
  2. Communicate equipment/instrument information to Clinical Manager and OR Team as needed.
  3. Check and prepare all instrument and equipment needs prior to daily surgical procedures.
  4. Treat co-workers, providers and patients with respect and dignity.
  5. Carry out medical and procedural aseptic techniques and universal precautions.
  6. Meet current documentation standards and policies and complete them during each workday.
  7. Assist in the positioning of the patient as needed.
  8. Assist in Code situations.
  9. Maintain a safe environment for patient, coworkers and self.
  10. Assist in the par levels for supplies by tracking and reporting needs for these to the Clinical Manager/Assistant Director or Center director.
  11. Maintain all sterile process logs needed in the cleaning area for chemicals and equipment use.
  12. Perform other jobs as assigned.
